Life-guard FAQs

Ive just re-homed some ex-battery hens who are looking pretty sorry for themselves, what should I do?

For the first few weeks in order to help the hens settle in, place several feed and water points to ensure all birds get access just in case there are more dominant birds in the flock. Caged hens will have been fed a dry mash, so feeding them an Ex-Bat Crumb or pellet feed specifically designed for birds from a commercial laying system, along with Life-Guard Tonic is advisable to help maintain a healthy immune system, supports gut flora and allow birds to cope with the new environmental change. Life-Guard Tonic will also support improving body weight, egg quality and number, feathering and skin condition. Feed at the higher rate of 25ml to 2 litres of drinking water for a minimum of 3 weeks. It is fine to feed a small amount of mixed corn in the afternoon, although this is not essential, they love it!

Can I feed Life-Guard to my ducks and geese?

Yes, Life-Guard Tonic and the Naturals range are suitable for hens, ducks, geese and all other poultry.

Can I feed Life-Guard to Chicks?

You can indeed, and we would recommend this to give them the best start in life. Continue to add Life-Guard to the hen’s water and the chicks will also drink from this.

Can I add Apple Cider Vinegar to water or should it be added to feed?

We would recommend adding ACV to their water at the rate of 10ml per litre of water. It is important though to buy 'live' ACV (like the one made by Life-Guard Naturals) as this contains the 'mother thread' which gives it all its beneficial properties. Do not use in a galvanised drinker.

My Chicken has Sour Crop, what can I do to help?

Sour crop is caused when the contents of the crop start to ferment, usually caused by a blockage in thecrop or further down the digestive system, which stops it from emptying properly. This results in a yeast build-up, hence the liquid spilling out and the bad breath. You will need to be careful though as chickens don't have a gag reflex, so can't actually vomit and will tend to choke on the liquid which seeps out. I would recommend that you feed only on dried layers feed, no greens or fruit and certainly no bread.
Add some life-Guard Naturals Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to the water on alternate days, alternating it with Life-Guard poultry tonic; the ACV will support healthy acid levels in the crop and gut, killing off the alkali-hungry yeast. Life-Guard tonic contains probiotics, to optimise healthy gut bacteria. In future, make sure that their diet only has small amounts of greenery and fruit, no stringy grass/greenery and definitely no bread

What colour eggs will my hens lay?

The colour of egg they lay can generally be predicted by the colour of the earlobe, so a hen with white earlobes (like a white star or Ancona) will lay white eggs, those with red earlobes will lay some shade of brown and those with blue/green earlobes (like Araucanas) will lay green or blue eggs. Certain pure breeds can be sure to lay a particular colour egg if their strain is pure, but hybrids (as are most hens) can vary depending on the mixture of breeds in their hybrid. Generally black hens will lay beige or light brown eggs. If you wanted really dark brown eggs, then a Marans would be the best hen. What is important though is the quality of the eggs; make sure that your hens are fed on mostly layers feed with very few treats at the end of the day. Add some Life-Guard Tonic to their water regularly to ensure that they have a good balance of nutrients in their diet.

Help, my chickens are eating their eggs, what can I do?

Egg eating is a hard habit to stop, rather like feather plucking; It is always best to keep removing the eggs from the nest on a regular basis, or use a roll-away nest box. It can also be caused by a vitamin or calcium deficiency; I would recommend adding extra calcium to their diet using limestone flour and some cod liver oil, and increasing their nutrient intake by adding Life-Guard tonic to their water.
